| Short Statement: | Putting People first! |
| Displacement Experience: | Since 1986, I have carried out a significant amount of consulting and research work on resettlement and was based in Cameroon between 1996 and 2007, while working for the World Bank, GEF, EU, KfW and GTZ. Since March 2007, I have been a social safeguards specialist at the ADB, and I am responsible for the review, finalization and clearance of the resettlement plans/ frameworks (150+/year) and project proposals (200+) for the entire portfolio (USD 11 billions/year in 44 countries) to assure compliance with ADB’s Resettlement policy. I also provided operational support for complex investment projects in Asia. With a view to developing a comprehensive argument on involuntary resettlements from protected areas, I conducted between 1996 and 2004 12 research case studies in 6 countries. Presentations of the findings - in parts supported by the World Bank and undertaken with Michael Cernea - on international conferences and policy making fora and backed up by publications in leading journals such as World Development have enhanced the recognition of the need for social safeguards among various conservation stakeholders. Further, I assisted the World Bank and governments in developing and implementing 15+ resettlement plans/frameworks, serve on the board of directors of the International Network on Displacement and Resettlement and have excellent working relation with key stakeholders from all sectors. |
