| Displacement Experience: |
Mahaweli Development project was the largest project that ever took place in the Country's history in view of providing irrigated lands for tens of thousands people. The project was funded by international banks and overseas governments. As a result of dams built across the Mahaweli river, the new road constructed, thousands of peoples were displaced. That time, as a senior NGO personnel I took very active part to discuss with government authority to mitigate the impact of the project to the local people who lived there for thousands of years. Also alternative settlements were discussed and arranged. Thereafter, holistic development of displaced population were carried out with the assistance of NGOs. |
